Ladies and Scumbags, I give to you...The top metal albums of the year as viewed by Jay Washcloth. And in no particular order it goes a little something like this...

Burning Skies - Desolation
Proof that England doesn't entirely suck. I kid, I kid...Anyway this band mixes things up quite well combining elements of technical, melodic and brutal death metal in a hardcore package. The vocals also have a good level of deviation to them to compliment the straight forward but often ranging material. 5150's hiss and snarl throughout the album with catchy riffing and memorable progressions. Multiple vocalists are in full affect and with the main vocalist showing moments that bring to mind John Tardy of Obituary one is not disappointed. Fans of Misery Index should check this out, think Chimaira....only good and not shitty like Chimaira.

Napalm Death - Smear Campaign
The legendary Napalm Death were back this past year with what is arguably the heaviest album they have ever put out. The production is on point (ooOOh hip hop slang!) and the song writing is as strong as ever. This band almost single handedly invented Grindcore and this is just another example of why they are one of, if not the, most influential band(s) in heavy music. Fast as fuck and as pissed off as ever this album is not to be taken lightly, meaning you won’t see this on the Ipod of a scenester combover having hot topic looking mall goth faggot. I could talk about the lyrics and how politically aware Napalm Death is but if you don't already know that please insert a fork into the nearby outlet.

Cannibal Corpse - Kill
Ripping the flesh off of posers and raping the freshly dead body of your childhood sweet-heart, North Americas answer to the eternal question "but what if flesh eating zombies ruled the world and played music so technical Yngwie Malsteen couldn't even throw water at it?" the legendary Cannibal Corpse returned in 06. And they not only returned, they released their most intense record in quite some time. With Jack Owen leaving the band it was unclear about how the new CC was going to sound. Rob Barrett rejoined the band and was quite possibly the element that was missing over the last few years. Well still maintaining the incredibly mindfucking structures and lengthy riffing style of their prior work, this new version of the band has far more life and aggression to their sound. Drumming is still the “weak” point of the group when held up to today’s gravity blasting, 1000 kick drum beats per minute standards. But the distinct style of drumming adds to the trademark Corpse sound. This album reminded me of a mix between Vile and The Wretched Spawn, if you don’t understand I’ve heard drowning is like a wet hug and may be of use to you.

Frightmare – Bringing Back The Bloodshed
This band fucking slays. They take it back to a time when horror movies and extreme metal were done right. Classic movie sampling accompanies a wide variety of kick ass destruction in the form of catchy metal riffs more often than a heroine junkie shoots up on binge day. At the mere flick of a Marshall standby switch this band will run through crossover, grindcore and traditional death metal territory as if it were the natural progression all bands should be doing. It works amazingly well and they are one of the few bands to capture a sound I have often only heard in my own head. Subscribing to the multiple vocalist school of thought there is a solid variety to the vocal attack in the way of shrieking demonic summoning. Razorback Records seldom disappoints and with flagship bands like Frightmare it is no wonder why that is true. Donny Don’t Dance and you shouldn’t either motherfucker.

Municipal Waste - Hazardous Mutation (Reissue)
The best crossover record in over a decade, this band is redefining what it means to play speed metal in the later part of the 00’s. Denim jackets are cool again. Getting drunk and moshing like you recently escaped a mental institution is not only acceptable, but highly encouraged by the band handing out boogie boards to their audiences. Oh and the band plays some of the best punk metal I have ever heard. What the world needs now is alcohol soaked riff driven speed metal, not love love love. And as you may have guessed by this point Olde English and cereal are always in order when facing the waste, as is illustrated on their recently released DVD included Re-issue of Hazardous Mutation.

Misery Index - Discordia
These guys are the perfect combination of a metalcore reminiscent approach in a grindcore package. Everything is delivered at the speed of an australian methhead on a crotchrocket desperately trying to reach refuge from the police. Kevin Talley can not be fucked with, his drum performance on this record is god like. The guitar work is brutal and as catchy as aids at a free dirty needle party. Well written conscious lyrics are barked and puked fourth in a percussive manner adding a rich tapestry of awesome to the already face raping package. An extremely high level of technicality is passed off so nonchalantly that when listened to as simple backround music the level of effort put fourth by Misery Index can be lost on the average monkey trying to work a typewriter. These Ex-Dying Fetus alumni have reached full stride with this effort. There are no weak moments, no contrived interludes, nothing but a crisp clean blast beat heavy, kick drum propelled beast of pure unadulterated destruction. Similar to the intro on their prior works title track Retaliate, the title track on Discordia slows down to reign in an ominous blanket of despair further showcasing that the bands musical prowess knows very little boundary, even if they so desire to smash faces ninety eight percent of the time. I highly recommend this album to fans of fast paced, brutal, punk influenced metal.

Municipal Waste are fuckin alwsome, and corpse's new album was pretty cool, haven't heard Napalm Death's new album yet but I'm going to get it soon, once I get cash. That other stuff seems to core-ish for my tastes

Mumakil - Customized Warfare
The single best band you have never heard of. Having opened for the who's who of European grindcore, these guys are no fucking joke. As their name suggests this band sounds like some sort of gigantic beast of war in full swing. They never show any sign of relent when delivering the most aggressive grind I have encountered in recent memory. Incorporating the fundamental essentials laid fourth by their predecessors Napalm Death, Terrorizer and the mighty Nasum, Mumakil is also recognizable by their new school tendencies in the way of the occasional sub human inward sounding vocal attacks and gravity blasts. But there is no need to be worried about the tired sounds of today, there is absolutely no sign of the dreaded cliche known as the "breakdown." How this god awful trend got started is beyond me and I can't for the life of me figure out why every 9 out of 10 bands I hear thinks its cool to play the open E string in a 1 2 3 4, pause, 1 2 3 4, pause, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4, pattern...But I digress, Mumakil is the freshest sounding grindcore band I have heard in quite some time and they do it without sounding trendy and contrived. They keep things pure, old school and angrier than 50 suicide bombers finding out their religion was wrong 3 seconds before detonation. The production is top quality and the album utilizes a plethora of appropriately badass samples before and after unleashing some of the albums finest cuts. If you can not tell by this point I really enjoyed this album and highly recommend it to fans of Rotten Sound, Phobia, Origin, Hate Eternal, Pig Destroyer, and the bands already mentioned earlier in this paragraph.

Seriously, this is a metal thread. I Like punk stuff, but I wouldn't post it in Jays thread here. Not the right time or place. And even so, this shit is WACK. Its like watered down Dropkick Murphys after they already watered themselves down. It insults the old street punk bands it blatantly rips off.
And Jay, as for the Waste up there in the top five, that was some of the best live shit I've seen in a long time. They fuckin blew Red Chord and Gwar out of the water.

Strapping Young Lad - The New Black.
Many may disagree with me about this selection as one of the top albums of this past year. But I am an avid fan of anything Devin Townsend is involved in and have been a huge fan of SYL for many years now. This album is possibly the most unique heavy metal record of the year due to the stylistic chances it takes. This is the only band aside from Nile that I have ever heard incorporate horns into extreme metal. And unlike the egyptian inspired blast lords of the prior sentence the wind instrumentation on this SYL record is present during moments when the entire band is in full swing. The structural use and melodic nature of the methodology borrows a page from an extremely unlikely source for inspiration in the form of ska. But the ever present theme on this album is hatred for the radio rock tendencies that have infiltrated metal in the past few years. Ol'Devy barks on the re-recorded version of Far Beyond Metal, "OH, you ironic pop rock fuck, DONT YOU FUCK WITH METAL!" and the man means it. There is a special appearance by everyones favorite space alien metal vocalist on that track as well. Moreover, this is still an SYL record and it has moments of extreme hostility as one would expect. When they choose to step into the breakneck rhythms the group has become synonymous with they do so in a pure fashion. The chaotically brilliant absurd audio sampling touches that are always present just out of grasp on these records are of course there. Devin's melodic genius also graces this record on tracks like Almost Again and the intro to the title track. It was not without its weak moments but I would say this is one of the best albums Strapping Young Lad has done, and is among mention when bringing up the top albums of two thousand six.

Most real "metalheads" would not consider the albums I am about to list as true metal...but honestly neither do I. But they were some GREAT releases in 2006 I think...

Killswitch Engage - As Daylight Dies
Some people wont give that "nu-metal" type of genre a chance, as most of those bands sound exactly the same. And they have nothing on classic 80's metal or anything like that. But I mean...a good band, is a good band.

More like metalcore than nu-metal. All those bands are good though, I'd put them in that order you have them in. Killswitch have been going downhill for awhile now though.

Satisfaction Is In The Death Of Desire is a fucking classic.
Honorable mentions meaning they should be on the list I was making but didnt get around to it go to : Gojira - From Mars To Sirius, Goatwhore - A Haunting Curse, Fuck The Facts - Stigmata High Five, and the Leng Tch'e / Warscars split EP.

Whether people think they sold out or not...Hatebreeds music is iconic and the cause of A LOT of people to get away from whatever they listened to at the time, and step into the Hardcore scene. Satisfaction is one of those albums that never gets boring to me. I don't know what the fuck they were thinking with Perseverence but everything else was damn good.

Yeah I was just being a little overly sarcastic. I saw them when they toured with Napalm Death and Exodus a few months back but they still didn't impress me at all, didn't even stay for the whole set.
