There may be another nugs around now? i havent painted since like that late 90's early 00's, you can see the pics i posted have the dates on em, so i would have done the piece a day before cause i usually take the pic the next day when its daylight unless its a legal ill take it straight after i finish. Hoek and nugs is what i mainly write though, but havent done a piece in years, i go some paint left over that i was gonna use for a piece in my garage, might do that over the christmas break.

Thats probably my favorite piece ive done besides this one which i couldnt get a close up shot of which is the one on the right in this pic. (Mary Altaffer/Associated Press) A large mural created by some of graffiti's earliest pioneers was discovered recently in a 10-storey limestone building in SoHo just as developers were converting it into luxury condominiums.
The artwork contains a variety of images and writing executed in spray paint, grease pencil, magic marker and whatever else was at hand — in silver, gold, pink and red. There are cartoon-like pictures of a bomber airplane, images of a heart and a cake, and several references to quaaludes, a popular 1970s party drug.
The mural was found in the eighth-floor loft owned by art critic Edit deAk in the late 1970s and the 1980s — a time when much of fringe art, including graffiti, was being validated. The wall is nearly intact, except for gaps where a dishwasher and plumbing were installed years later.

Fab 5 Freddy and Futura 2000 — who helped pioneer graffiti as an art form by spray-painting entire subway trains in psychedelic colours — figure prominently on the wall.
There's also writing believed to belong to Jean Michel Basquiat. The stylistic words "Dead or Alive" strongly suggest that it is the late artist's work. His tag, "SAMO," appears in the stairwell of the building.
But experts say the wall's significance doesn't depend on Basquiat, who died in 1988 of an overdose at age 27 and whose works command millions of dollars on today's art market. Rather, it's a testament to the underground culture of almost 30 years ago, and especially to the iconic artists who were living the art of the street.
"It's a great discovery," says Alberto Mugrabi, a major Basquiat and Andy Warhol collector. "It's the beginning of graffiti [as art]."
"Obviously, it's a critical piece of history, SoHo history," says Lisa Dennison, the former director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.
The developers, Michael and Izak Namer, purchased the building in 2004, and had long heard rumours about some hidden art. But they dismissed the rumours even after Rite-Art magazine editor deAk, who moved out in 1984, told them: "There is a Basquiat, and it's somewhere where you won't think it is."
Basquiat or not (deAk did not return calls for comment), the mystery was solved last year by Michael Namer's son, Matthew, who was then living in the loft-turned-two-bedroom apartment.
"He started to poke around, climbs on the kitchen cabinets and opens up a little piece," says Namer.
"Futura 2000" in black and grey stylized calligraphy was revealed — a "Holy Grail" of
graffiti since Futura was only 16 when he wrote it. The building's conversion — by renowned architect Lee Skolnick — was immediately halted in the former loft.
Workers treating the site like an archeological dig brought the kitchen cabinets down with the gypsum board behind it. Another wallboard and a white tiled wall hid a smaller section of the mural, found in what had become a bathroom.
Consult with experts

Finding themselves in possession of "an iconic piece that created the renaissance of what downtown became — a viable and interesting place to live," the Namers say they set out to authenticate the wall. They consulted with Guggenheim chief conservator Paul Schwartzbaum, Dennison, Mugrabi and other experts.
"Is it an artwork or is it a relic of the era? It's a little bit of both," says Dennison, now executive vice-president at Sotheby's. "It has the hands of so many artists, and that's what makes it so interesting and exciting."
The mural will be publicly unveiled Thursday as part of a retrospective exhibit of the graffiti art movement (1980-1985). Running until Feb. 15 in the SoHo building's Gallery 151, The Wild Style Exhibit takes its name from the iconic 1982 hip-hop movie.
The show will display works of graffiti's greats: Keith Haring, Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Ero and Fab 5. All come from private collections, many unseen since the 1980s, including Scharf's Palladium, a mural canvas created for the reincarnated Palladium Music Hall and Disco, and Basquiat's portrait of Fab 5 Freddy.

(Mary Altaffer/Associated Press) The Namers have invested "in the six figures" on the mural, hiring art conservator Harriet Irgang and California landscape photographer Bob Weingarten to document the process and produce a catalogue for the exhibit.
Irgang has stabilized the two walls by applying an adhesive to flaking paint and glitter. Next, she will cover the mural with tissue paper, cheesecloth and a stiff fabric to enable the graffiti to be "peeled" off — a process that involves using spatulas and chisels to separate the plaster from the coarse brown mortar behind it. Once freed, the graffiti will be mounted on a lightweight panel so it can be moved.
Ultimately, the Namers want to donate the graffiti to a major museum and are currently in discussions with several. Few graffiti walls exist, as many were painted over or destroyed.
Wall a 'visual document'

Fred Brathwaite, also known as Fab 5 Freddy, a hip-hop pioneer who has forged a career in music videos, says the graffiti was a spontaneous collaboration among the various artists who visited the loft.
He calls the wall a "visual document to a turning point in a cultural landscape and in the art world."
Basquiat mentor Diego Cortez agrees. "They took something that was local — self-taught like folk art — and made it something beyond that," he said.
In 1979-1980, he drew a large red airplane dropping a bomb (as an anti-establishment symbol) and spray-painted "Fred" and "Fab 5 Freddy" after deAk asked him to "tag my wall."
The loft was a kinetic space where artists creating and experimenting in new art forms could crash, cook a meal together and swap ideas. Brathwaite says he came there with Futura and Basquiat, and recalls mingling with filmmaker Eric Mitchell, members of the rock group Blondie and fashion model Lisa Rosen, who appeared in the Basquiat cult film Downtown 81.
The loft was a microcosm of the scene outside: a burgeoning art district with galleries showing artists Roy Lichtenstein, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol, and nightclubs like the Fun Gallery and Mudd Club — fixtures of the underground music and counterculture.
Dennison says the mural could be a wonderful addition to any museum, especially as a focus of an educational program, given that some of the artists are still around.
It could potentially also find a place in SoHo, she says, as "a freestanding monument to the era."

ok, ok, im going to forgive you for one of the most ignorant and uneducated posts YOUVE ever made now Rev. now time to school.

heres the thing...spray painting a mural, vs. painting a canvas

they are two completely different skills.
its like driving a car, vs. playing a car driving video game.
They both look the same to the passenger/viewer, but to the person doing it...they are in fact very fucking different....

So for me, painting a mural, is a chance to hone skills that are not as easy to sharpen.... I maybe painted about 200 canvas's but Ive only had enough walls to paint maybe 70 pieces over the last 15 years.

Painting a wall, requires you to use your entire body....think about it, that last wall I did was was about 9 feet high, by 14 or so feet wide...
so I basically was stretching and standing on top of junk to reach the top, and theres no way I could paint a line from one end to the other without walking...

compare that to say the largest canvas in my house right now, which is 5'x4' easily i can reach all the dimensions from my seat, and rest my arm on the canvas...

painting a wall, you are holding a can, that gets colder as you use it...and the co2 will actually liquify in winter, rendering spraypaint useless..

the can goes from weighing 11 ounces full to maybe an ouce empty,...
a brush, with paint on it weighs the same almost every time, (next to nothing)

add to this the weather, local crackheads passing by, police, and all the other stuff that comes with being outside, and not all warm n cozy....and you've got a much different experience in wall painting from canvas painting....

and hey, any non writers ever tried to paint with spray paint???

its actually a bit trickier than the average monkey thinks...to get a straight clean line, or evenly applied coverage, is not as simple as pressing the button....Ive seen so many fools destroy their bikes and furniture with spray paint..

if the temperature in january jumps to where I can wear a tshirt, then yes, I am going to try and go commit a crime....a small, in the world of crime crime. its a misdemeanor in the states, but here its called mischeif, under or above $5000....

and take a look at the wall man, its not like I painted this where there was no previous graff, and I ruined this building, in fact I cleaned up the wall a bit, by covering some nonsense, and will protect that space because my name holds a bit of weight and will generally only get written over after a period of time, or another higher ranking writer tops me...Orrrrrr, when some douchebag kid that drew some piece in his book all winter decides he know how to paint and totally fucks up my piece because of his revenant like ignorance.




What a lot of you plebians dont realize is that painting a graffiti wall with any skill take a minimum 5 years or some very good tuttilage from extremely skilled elders.

the reason there is so much shitty graff, is because anyone can pickup a can and press the button.....but few actually take there time to learn and train themselves to have skills to pay the bills...most of the kids that get into it, paint a few really suckass pieces, go tagging, get caught once, get slapped by mommy and never do it again..and those people never get to the level of the Mac Dre memorial piece above..or better

Ive been painting shit for a long time, and done a good chunk of illegal stuff, but Ive also balanced it out with a good chunk of volunteer community work, Enough even to feel comfortable breaking the law here and there from time to time because I know my resume of volunteering and even being hired by the city of Toronto, will go a long way in keeping me from ever really being prosecuted.



Oh, and one last thing rev....that wall I painted will also serve the purpose of advertising me to the community of urban kids who may one day, visit my site, hire me for design, or generally dick ride me at the next graffiti convention...which is something that holds a lot of weight with me, and the graffiti community in general. respect is earned, you have to do the thing to be a part of it, and have any juice. you cant fall off either. if you stop painting for 2 years, you may as well have never existed in the eyes of the other writers. And you sure as fuck cant go making money off of it if you havent done the illegal part, or you will be fucking faker than marc ecko...

Word horus i agree with you there, can control is something thats pretty hard to pick up. Its hard to get paint not to run etc and to know how to apply the paint etc especially if you cant afford decent paint and are using some runny shit. Also theres all different types of nozzles for different lines (thick/thin/filling in) so its like using different paint brushes in another form.

Man everytime i come in this thread i wanna get some paint and start painting again.

In December, graffiti writers AUGER and REVOK modified a billboard advertising the wonderful Takashi Murakami (http://www.takashimurakami.com/) exhibit at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Two days later, the billboard was removed. The LA Weekly now reports that Murakami himself saw online photos of the graffitied billboard and thought it to be "so wonderful, he had to have it for his collection," according to his representatives. When is cleaning the sidewalks a crime? When you’re doing it to create art. Obviously.
A number of street artists around the world have taken to expressing themselves through an innovative practice known as Reverse Graffiti (http://bldgblog.blogspot.com/2006/11/automotive-ossuary.html). Taking a cue from the “Wash Me” messages scrawled on the back of delivery trucks, they seek out soot covered surfaces and inscribe them with images, tags, and even advertising slogans using scrub brushes, scrapers and pressure hoses.

The UK’s Paul Curtis, better known as “Moose,” (http://www.neatorama.com/2006/09/13/soap-not-spray-can-reverse-graffiti-art/) is one of the technique’s pioneers. Operating around Leeds and London, he has been commissioned by a number of brands, such as Smirnoff, who want to convey a sense of “clean” in an innovative way.
On a more overtly environmental bent, Brazilian Alexandre Orion (http://eyeteeth.blogspot.com/2006/11/inverse-pollution-art.html), turned one of Sao Paolo’s transport tunnels into a stunning mural last summer. The mural, comprised of a series of skulls, very succinctly reminds drivers of the impact their emissions are having on the planet.
The practice puts authorities in a definite moral quandary. According to Moose, “Once you do this, you make people confront whether or not they like people cleaning walls or if they really have a problem with personal expression.” The Leeds City Council decided to lead their attack with an hilariously nonsensical position:“Leeds residents want to live in clean and attractive neighborhoods, and expect their streets to be free of graffiti and illegal advertising. We also view this kind of rogue advertising as environmental damage and will take strong action against any advertisers carrying out such campaigns without the relevant permission.”
What action was taken against the advertisers is unknown. What is known is that Moose was charged under the very scary sounding Anti-Social Behaviour Act and ordered to clean up his clean act. I’m not exactly sure how he managed to did this. By making it dirty again?

The Brazilian artist’s work came to a happier resolution. The authorities were certainly miffed but could find nothing to charge him with. They had no other recourse but to clean the tunnel — but only the parts Alexandre had already cleaned. The artist merely continued his campaign on the other side of traffic. The utterly flummoxed city officials then decided to take drastic action. Not only did they clean the entire tunnel but also every other tunnel in Sao Paulo.
Bravo!

Holy fucking Boom!

-For this wall, we said fuck letters, fuck rules, fuck doing anything but being gay and arty with spraypaint just to fuck up the game like that. We started this wall out taggin back n forth, painting alone on the piece for a few minutes while the other hung and smoked out. Eventually we were both gangraping the wall..towards the end Elicsr had to be out, so I did all the black around the borders. I think this shit is pretty fuckin gully.
