i cant wait for the growth. rekon its gonna be one of 06s albums to remember. cunt has a lotta skill, hes flow is ridiculous plus hes got the lyrics to back it up. he is most definately taking over this year.

Joe Budden is a pretty calm dude…sometimes. Amidst flash happy fans, antsy club promoters and groupies, he managed to give even, coherent answers to my questions. Mere minutes before stretching lungs tight from years of smoking, with Techno beats from the adjacent club invading a dim backstage room already thick with hip hop, Joe avoided a “mood;” a “mood” that makes him vent frustrations, unabashed, about the almost three year gap between his debut album and still unreleased sophomore effort; a “mood” which seems to envelop “That Dude” whenever his own hip hop Superman decides being Clark Kent is just not enough.

When Jay-Z became president of Def Jam Recordings in 2005 he said Joe’s self titled debut was a prime example of projects that could have sold more if the budget was handled wisely. The Jersey lyricist apparently knows that Jay realizes how nice he is, so why the hold up? Nobodysmiling.com caught up with Joe Budden (courtesy of DJ Furious Styles) at Fur Nite club in D.C. to find out, plus talk hoops, his four year old son’s new rhymes, and celly endorsements. Before he pumped fire into a pretty sloshed crowd, Joe exuded clarity. Talk to em son!

Nobodysmiling.com : All right homie, I know you about to go on in a minute-by the way the Mood Musik joint is crazy in my rotation crazy right now.

Joe Budden : Ah! Thank you. That’s what I need, that’s what I need. I need to hear that.

Nobodysmiling.com : But let’s get right into it. Let’s talk about The Growth man. How joints you got recorded?

Joe Budden : The Growth. I can’t even-I don’t even really know what to say man. I been recording for three years…for one album. This sophomore shit- like, this is much harder than the first time around; I’m dealing with much more bullshit and I gotta make sure the music is that much better. So I mean, at the end of the day I’mma make sure it’s about fifteen or sixteen records on there.

Nobodysmiling.com : Which records will they be?

Joe Budden : I don’t know. I’m creative everyday, I’m recording everyday; so I don’t know. I have to see when the time comes. The album’ll be out in the summertime, probably late summer like August or something like that. I’m working it out now. But the shit I got recorded so far is definitely crack.

You got a single in mind that you would like to see happen?

Joe Budden : I got a few of em in mind. I got a record called “Whatchu Doin Tonight” with Fabolous on it, Timberland produced it. I got another record called “Take It Off” that my ***** Dubb B produced, and I got this other record with Jermaine Dupri- I got a few records.

Nobodysmiling.com : A few joints?

Joe Budden : I got a few records that are pretty crazy, so it’s just all about what direction I wanna go in.

Nobodysmiling.com : Now you go with the “Regular Joe”-regular dude with skills-type of image on your mix tapes NBS:. I you were LA Reid, if you were someone in promotions, what would a poster for The Growth look like if it was up to you?

Joe Budden : A poster for The Growth would be a picture that you can take of me any day because the same way I am any day is the same way I am on that stage-it’s the same way I am in that booth-like you see me right now. The jewelry is home, I got a black T-shirt on, I’m ready to go out there and handle my business and perform like muthafuckin cats used to do back in the day. So it wouldn’t even be all about um…all about, ya know, fuckin stylists and photo shoots and all of that. As long as my fuckin shape up is crisp, take that picture any fuckin day, put out a record and let’s fuckin rock and roll.

Nobodysmiling.com : Early, early. Now I heard you use a lot of NBA players in your metaphors. What’s your favorite game of all times and why?

Joe Budden : Ah. All… time.

Nobodysmiling.com : Or one you’ve even seen recently that was hot.

Joe Budden : You know what? Kobe scoring 81 was pretty memorable and I hate Kobe Bryant, but it’s just good to be alive when history is made-good to be able to tell your grand children, ‘I was there for that. I saw that.’ But I’m a Knick fan so I gotta go with um-man we had so many-

Nobodysmiling.com : They’re ass this year though.

Joe Budden : Naw, them *****s are horrible. Them *****s are hor-ri-ble.

Nobodysmiling.com : But the old squads?

Joe Budden : But um… Larry Johnson, Chris Childs, Alan Houston, Pat, Oakley, Smith, Anthony Mason, Hubert Davis- them *****s in the nineties. It was a lot of games with them. Anytime they played the Bulls it was a good game. A lot of times when we choked in the playoffs, those are good games. So I mean, I got alotta favorite games.

Nobodysmiling.com : OK. Now being from Jerse how would you feel about the relocation of Nets to BK?

Joe Budden : I don’t fuck with the Nets.

Nobodysmiling.com : You don’t mess with em?

Joe Budden : I can’t fuck with em. They moving-they moving to Brooklyn. They not repping no more, so I can’t fuck with em.

Nobodysmiling.com : All right. Now we know that the President of your label would have a big hand in that. Clarify for me the lyrics on the “Old School Mouse” jawn when you’re like, ‘can’t listen to Blueprint’ something, something, ‘resentment towards Hov.’

Joe Budden : I mean, basically when Hov came over to Def Jam I felt like that would be my big break because Hov is one of the greatest to ever do it, in my opinion probably the greatest to ever do it, and I’m a lyricist and we’re lacking that nowadays in hip hop. So I figure shit if there’s a lyricist running the label-

Nobodysmiling.com : Real would recognize real.

Joe Budden : Exactly. But he came over there and me and him had some pretty productive conversations and I mean-but that line really just is all about like, when I hear about Hov still performing at “Summer Jam” or when I hear a record and I still hear Hov; like, it’s great because I love hearing Hov, but the business side, the artist in me, I get mad-I get upset; cause there’s a president of my label who’s supposed to be fucking running things and getting these artists out and doing what he’s supposed to do and he’s still being the greatest of all time. Like, how can we-we competing with each other. Like, I just feel like sometimes his focus might be in the wrong places, but that’s when I’m in one of my moods. But that’s what the line was about: so I have a heard time listening to-he’s my favorite rapper-but I just have a hard time listening to him, even the old shit, because I just get upset; cause it brings me back to my current situation and why things may be a little bit harder than they should. So that’s all. A lot of people said it was a diss. It wasn’t dissin Hov.

Nobodysmiling.com : Yeah I didn’t see it like that.

Joe Budden : Not at all. Nah.

Nobodysmiling.com : Can you talk to me about the inspiration behind “3 Sides to a Story” man. That joint is critical. Where’d you come up with that?

Joe Budden : Man. The inspiration from it actually was real serious. I was driving, I was going to play ball one day, and somebody real close to me called me and said that she had gotten raped. She wasn’t a young girl-but said she had gotten raped and unfortunately it was someone that she knew. And when I heard that I was there for her, I was her shoulder to lean on and all that, but the creative side of me just came out and said-and I watch a lot of Law & Order and all that type shit-so hearing that and then seeing the type of shit I be seeing and then other stories that I hear, that’s probably how it came out. So it’s definitely inspired by a true story.

Nobodysmiling.com : So on the business of things what’s up man? Are you gonna try to approach Nextel about something? You mention them a lot on the “I’m Back” mix tape.

Joe Budden : Nah, I already got a situation with um… with Boost. So I have a situation already; probably another reason I did that.

Nobodysmiling.com : How old I your son now man?

Joe Budden : My son’ll be five in May. May11th my baby will be five and he’s-he’s rapping now. He just started rapping the other day.

Nobodysmiling.com : Are you censoring the stuff he’s listening to and watching?

Joe Budden : No. My child’s mother just called me the other day and said, ‘you’re son is rapping. I’m dead serious.’ And she put him on the phone and he was really tryna rap. I couldn’t believe it. I’m very proud.

Nobodysmiling.com : So you would support him in that if he wanted to be a rapper?

Joe Budden : Hell yeah! Hell yeah! Just don’t do all the other dumb shit that rappers do or that I did to become a rapper and have something to talk about; better find something else to talk about-be like Will Smith or something.

Nobodysmiling.com : Do you have another mix tape coming out before the album?

Joe Budden : Mood Musik Part 3 will be out before that. And I’m already working on it. I set the bar kind of high with Mood Musik 2, so I don’t know what the fuck I’mma do.

Nobodysmiling.com : So you messing with On Point for this one or another DJ?

Joe Budden : Yeah, yeah, yeah. I fuck with other DJ’s for my other mix tapes, but when it’s Mood Musik time I fuck with On Point. That’s my *****.

I used to hate this guy, but after the whole G unit beef I gave him a chance since his disses were so potent. Now I'm a fan. Especially his verse on 6 minutes of death.
