How can I trace who cashed my check?

I have a social security type check that I was suppose to get about a week ago.
I called the place it came from when the day it was suppose to come in the mail past, and they said I have to wait a few days before they can find out if it had been cashed.Well I called today and found out it was cashed.
I stay in a building with a mailbox that is connected to other mailboxes.The mailman is notorious for putting mail in the wrong mailbox.
So I assume he put the check in the wrong mailbox and someone else cashed it.
I read up that for someone else to cash a check of yours, all hey have to do is forge your endorsement to them.for example: "Pay to the order of-Fuckinassholewhostolemymoney".
Does anyone know if it can be that easy.
More important than the money, is the notion that someone copied my ID, uses my social, etc....considering the mailman fucks up all the time, so they could have received all kinds of crucial info.
Imma get a PO Box to prevent this from happening again.
But what I really would like to know, is how can I trace who the fuck did this WITHOUT getting the police involved.
Right now, thats the only way I know to doit, file a report, have them investigate.
BUT, when you live in a building with a potential grimey muhthafucka that you got charges pressed on..that could cause some tension.Plus I ain't no bitch ass nigga! (hahahaha).
But for real, I'd like to track this muhfucka without the law involved, and approach him/her and get my money.
So does anyone know of a non-police way of doing that?

man around here to cash a government check like that you have to have your ID on you and even give them your social security number at places like wal mart or other places where you don't need an account to cash a check. that's crazy that the person got away with it that easy. they always check to see your ID before cashing some serious shit like that around here. i have a bank account though so i just go to my bank to cash shit and all i hafta do is show them my debit card to cash my shit. i'm sure they can trace it to the place they cashed it at.. once you find the place the person cashed it at go there and just ask them about it. the person who worked will probably remember what the person looked like because not many people cash those kind of checks everyday and it was probably the only check like that that has been cashed there recently so there is a good chance they will remember what the person looked like. also they can check their security tapes to maybe see the person on video doing it if you can find out what day and time it was exactly which you will probably find out once they trace it.

i figure whoever cashed it, left an easy to trace trail.
BUT, the thing is..how do i hop onto that trail without going to the police?
I usually deposit any check or money order or anything like that in my name into my bank account (which is assed out right now do to this).
maybe they have some traceable info?
I need a service or info of how I can trace this sloppy trail without dealing with cops.

see i actually drew a diagram of the 8 mailboxes that encircle mine.
i think at least two of them are black.and some are puerto rican.
and the woman downstairs i know i accidentally flooded her apartment before when i was using my washing machine and forgot to put the hose that the water gushes out of, in the sink.

maybe just goto some check cashing places around your area and ask around.. that's the only way to do it without the cops getting involved. the person had to cash it at some seedy local check cashing place because that's the only places that would cash that thing.. grocery stores cant cash government checks. wal mart will cash them too but they ask for you social. so check google maybe for all the local check cashing spots around your area. that's where it got cashed at.. a ghetto check cashing place. i guarantee it man.

that sounds like solid advice..but the only thing is I'm in New York.Finding the seedy check cashing place is a needle in 20 haystacks.cause they don't have to do it locally too.they could do that anywhere in the 5 boroughs or beyond.
i might have to chalk up the money to circumstance..i just don't want my identity in jeopardy and need to make sure it isn't.
from now on mail only goes to a P.O. Box or my Brooklyn house.

can you contact the people who sent the cheque to you and tell them it was stolen and someone else cashed it? let them do all the work. Its not really your cheque but your money, so the cheque sender would probably have to trace it.

if the check was sent to you and in their eyes you cashed it then they should have no problem telling you where it was cashed. If you dont wanna get the police involved and your that serious about finding the person you should price out a private investigator im sure they have acess to info like that. I say you call for a building meeting and address all of the tennants on this matter George Costanza/Larry David style. Scrutinize them all as fiercely as you can. Explain how you are going to go against your will to call the cops on the situation so that they cant say that you snitch.

Tone, its difficult as FUCK to cash, or even deposit...someone elses federal check of any kind. You need a ton of different ID's, and like Pu$$ said...all the check cashing places take a thumbprint/picture/photocopies of ID's and all that. When I worked at the post office we'd get a ton of those stimulus checks...but there was no point in stealing any since its basically impossible for a regular joe to just roll in a liquor store or a bank and cash that shit.

Unless whoever had your check KNEW the people at the cashing place or liquor store, and had a hookup. im just going off benefit fraud in the uk here, i done a ton of dodgy dole checks in the past as i used to break into post boxes and cash other peoples dole cheques. im so proud of this.

your probably never gonna find out who it was even if you get the polis involved, they would catch the fraud and it would then be between the fraudster and the welfare people, youd get another cheque but nothing else. maybe when it was stolen form your box there were other letters in there to act as ID, maybe a bill etc?

so the rental office cashed it..for rent..which is good because there was no foul play and i'm not out of any money because what i'll owe for rent is the difference of the check.
