Most conspiracy theories are based around things that the general population would never be able to prove. Anything kept secret from the general population is a breeding ground for conspiracy theories.

(AGI) - Palermo, June 17 - Eight 'prominent' arrests were made by the
police of Trapani and Agrigento last night, the conclusion of an
investigation by the Anti-mafia District Department of Palermo into
attempts to slow down legal proceedings against members of the mafia
with the help of members of the Freemasonry. One of the arrested is
Michele Accomando, entrepreneur in Mazara del Vallo (Trapani), already
arrested in 2007, charged with mafia membership. The man is member of
the loggia "Gran Serenissima" of the Freemasonry of Trapano. An
official of the Finance Ministry working in Agrigento, Calogero Licata
was also arrested, as well as a businessman from Agrigento, Nicola
Sorrentino, and an employee of the Court of Cassation, Guido Peparaio,
employee of the registrar's office of the second penal section of the
Court of Cassation. But according to the investigators the key figure
is another arrested, the Roman wheeler-dealer Rodolfo Grancini.
Also arrested are a gynaecologist from Palermo, Renato De Gregorio,
who would have been favoured through the delay of his case in
Cassation, and a policewoman, Francesca Surdo, secretary of the
director of the operational central Service of the State police.

Too lazy to look for a proper article about it.

Italy has had a few run-ins with conspiracies but I can't remember any details.

According to documents declassified in 2005, no attack on the USS Maddox actually took place

Watergate
Nixon and co. illegal break-ins, wiretaps, surveillance, stolen documents, etc. of political opponents then covered it up

Prohibition of marijuana
Dupont, Andrew Mellen, William Randolph Hearst, Harry J. Anslinger conspire to scare Congress into banning the cannabis plant. The up-and-coming hemp industry threatens Dupont's line of petroleum-based products and newspaper giant Hearst's interests in the woodpulp/timber-based paper industry. US Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellen is Dupont's major financier, as well as Drug Czar Harry Anslinger's boss and his wife's uncle. To persuade Congress, Anslinger presents junk science, blatant lies, racist fearmongering, and fabricated stories of mayhem printed in Hearst's newspapers, and calls the cannabis/hemp plant "marihuana" to confuse Congress as to what plant was being discussed and to stoke feelings of racism and bigotry against mexican-americans who use it.

Just a few off the top of my head. Conspiracies are proven true all the time...its just that nowadays there seems to be a stigma attached to the term due to a groundswell of idiots who think the very idea of a "conspiracy" is somehow unlikely, kooky, and far-fetched.

yeah, it depends on the conspiracy and the proof available but yes, thousands of conspiracies have existed in history, it's not really a solid question.

What you are really asking tesckone is whether any group of powerful people have ever worked together to shape the course of events and the answer is, of course, yes.

I think this has more to do with you being told certain stories of what "the illuminati" (really vague term) are and not being sure if these stories are true. There have been loads of self-proclaimed "illuminatis" throughout history whose existences aren't really in doubt. It seems more a case of being uncertain of what these groups are supposed to be about rather than whether or not they existed/exist. It's all those half-baked documentaries. :hsnono:
