We supported the Shah in Iran and the Revolution he faced in the 1970s helped to ignite the whole fundamentalist movement in the Middle East. But even after that fundamentalist movement had won over Iran, we still traded weapons with them in order to get hostages back. We funded Saddam because he was fighting Iran and keeping away the Soviets. We funded Osama and helped the mujahadeen defeat the Soviet Union. We've funded Israel because they are America's only foothold in the Middle East.

The matter is not as simple as some "we bombed them and created terrorists" type of theory. It is more a matter of a people who see their way of life threatened by changing circumstances. This area of the world is no stranger to outsiders, seeing as how most of it was ruled by outsiders for the past 500s years; first the Ottomans, then the British. Not to mention it is the historic crossroads of world trade. With the fall of the Soviet Union, there has been a partial power vacuum that both the U.S. and fundamentalists have been trying to fill.

You cant say it's to counterbalance the threat from pallestine cos the pallestinian people have never really had an army of any size. Then to think that libya and syria and iran are all part of an "axis of evil" (i think they were georges words) is unreel. The reason was simple: look at what happened to the Jews when they didn't have an army. Even after the army was built the Jews were at constant war with their neighbors in the Middle East. At first, the Americans were heroes to Arabs because we represented freedom: freedom first from the Ottoman Empire and then from the British. Afterwards, Arab and Muslim nations in the Middle East were perfectly happy with milking the two superpowers for what they were worth. That was the reason we started to help Israel and installed a puppet regime in Iran. We wanted sure Allies who were going to advance our interests. It achieved the short-term goal of winning the Cold War, but Americans or anybody else couldn't foresee what was going to happen afterwards.

The Axis of Evil was North Korea, Iraq and Iran. Syria was not included and Libya has actually warmed up to the U.S. in recent years.

That's one way to look at it. Those arms that Arab nations have supplied Palestine with were largely donated to those Arab nations by the United States, the irony is delicious. We have given arms to all sides at all points in time. We even backed Egypt against Israel during the Suez Canal Crisis. Therefore, we haven't supplied arms to just "one side".

The truth is that the Palestinian cause was something that Arab nationalist leaders could use to rally their own people around a common cause. Arabs have traditionally been divided people with a long history of war. After WWII, Arab leaders found themselves leaders of nations that were fragile. A good way to strengthen your nation and unite them is to pick a nebulous cause (ie Palestinian liberation) and focus your people on it. Arab nations helping the Palestinians is less about altruistic motives and more about opportunism. In that regard, Arabs and Americans have much in common. Don't try to paint Arabs as the victims because history doesn't back you up on it.

I already said in my last post that we helped different sides at different periods of time in history depending on how much we benefit at the time. Where's the disagreement? Terrorist groups like Al Qaeda, Hamas, Muslim Brotherhood, etc. all try to recruit these types of people because it is easy to turn their hatred against the U.S. They feel that the west is responsible for these dislocations (which they largely are) and see a return to the fundamentals of Islamic teaching as the best way to ground their lives again in something stable and secure.

I don't like this country but i'm putting up with it anyway for the time being. I've only really began to notice how much shit this country really is over the last 3 or four years. Hell yes i'd like to move, maybe buy some land in Jamaica, but thats dreaming for now.

So all in all i think being patriotic is not important. Just be proud of yourself. A country is just an illusion, the owners turf. Freedom is not something we have either. You can't police freedom. What we have isn't bad compared to how most have it but it's not freedom.
